Sylla Sheppard-Hanger: Leaving a Legacy to Serve
Who is Sylla Sheppard-Hanger?
“…in 1989, Sylla began the Atlantic Institute of Aromatherapy to further the quality of aromatherapy education and training. Since then she’s become recognized as one of the pillars in her field and cultivated a rich intellectual legacy…
..after 9/11, September 11, 2001, Sylla helped form the United Aromatherapy Effort… that collected and disseminated aromatherapy products to first responders after disasters.
The UAE ran for ten years and served in relief efforts in New York after 9/11. in Mississippi after Hurricanes Katrina and Gustav, and finally served by sending aromatherapy products to deployed soldiers at Camp Phoenix in Kabul, Afghanistan…”
“…it’s good to give, but you can’t give at the expense of your own health and wellbeing. So make sure you have that under control.”
Tips for ‘first responders’ to limit the chance of getting PTSD:
- limit the time you’re working in one go
- make sure your nutrition is top notch
- stay hydrated
- keep your electrolytes up
- debrief at the end of every day
- then go home, and do loads of the things you love
- get some serious rest to help rejuvenate yourself
Be careful because you can end up getting emotionally attached to an oil and then every time you smell it afterward it can throw you back there.
Essential Oils to arm yourself with if you’re doing disaster relief work:
- floral oils
- citrus oils
- pine oils
But always check people’s preferences before application!
Sylla recommends taking things that can be used in a spray so you don’t have to worry about running out of supplies
What I thought:
Wow, this one as hard reading. Especially when Sylla started talking about young soldiers returning from the war’s not being supported and the sheer number who take their own lives every day. Sylla mentions its up to 24 a day now – so every hour a soldier is taking their life over in the USA. Over here in the UK we have a huge amount of young men who take their lives and it just shouldn’t happen.
Suicide is something I talk to people about quite a lot, and while you think that makes it easier it doesn’t. I am so sad that someone gets to that point where they see no way out. In this day and age, there’s a whole host of research showing how someone can be supported through things like PTSD, and other mental health difficulties so that suicide stops being an option.
I’m going to leave you with something one of my recent therapy clients said about her treatment because I think this might help some of you understand why suicide becomes an option in the first place…
When I rang you I had got to the point, that point when I was at a crossroad. I had already stopped caring whether I was here for me. I got up every day because I’m a mum and have to care for my child but for me? I stopped getting up for me a long time ago. I had just stopped feeling anything about life. If I didn’t wake up the next day then I really didn’t mind. It hit me yesterday that I really don’t feel like that anymore. While I wouldnt have committed suicide I just felt flat and it just didn’t matter… I am excited for life, and I don’t want to die. I want to live, and see this through. And not for my child, but for me. Because I want to be here for me, I can be here for my child in a way I haven’t been for so many years.
Karey Shane: Touching the Heart and Soul of Sex Trafficking Victims
Who is Karey Shane?
“…She is an aromatherapist, and has done a lot of work with victims of sex trafficking. So we’re going to talk today about helping victims of sex trafficking to learn to live with the fear inside them… everybody’s got fear inside them so this is going to be a topic for a lot of people.”
A blend for childhood trauma
Karey added these oils in equal measure to terracotta rescue stones which were sent out to children in Nepal as part of the Elizabeth Smart Foundation, Operation Underground Railroad, and Help International effort.
- red mandarin
The ‘M’ technique to bring down blood pressure & heart rate
Karey uses the M technique on victims hands (it can also be done on the arms, and feet), as a massage to help calm, soothe and relax them.
Creating a carry around inhaler:
Add a cotton ball to a 5ml bottle, and then add the oil of choice. This is then given to the victims so they can carry around the bottle, and keep the scent, and therapeutic properties of the oil for a long time. Lavender is a great one because it helps calm, relax and soothe.
What I thought:
So as I wipe the tears from my eyes I should probably tell you why they’re streaming down my face in the first place. Karey was talking about how many sex traffick victims have touch issues, and then she quoted one such victim…
“This is the first time anyone’s touched me with such love and gentleness. I’ve never been touched like this.”
OH MY DAYS! Even just writing this right now is making me well up! I think putting people’s words to what’s really happening is such a powerful way to really grasp the effects these traumas have on people.
There’s a whole lot more in this talk which you are seriously going to want to know about – Karey talks about helping veterans with a ‘base camp beard oil’, emotional aromatherapy and PTSD (to name a few)…
Seriously it’s time you absolutely put your hand in your pocket! Help raise money for more inhaler bottles to be given out to victims. Get your donation on and obviously, grab all the essential oil knowledge at the same time! Click the button below:
Niki Gratrix: Essential Oils to Reverse Emotional Trauma in Childhood
Who is Niki Gratrix?
“…Niki is an award-winning, internationally renowned registered nutritionist and health writer who specialises in stress and optimizing energy. In 2005 , she cofounded one of the largest mind-body clinics in integrative medicine in the UK with patients in literally 35 countries where she worked as a director of nutrition until 2010…”
“…the emotional trauma in childhood and these adverse childhood experiences, are probably the most underexposed areas impacting health over a lifetime. And the studies are strong. They’re big. They’re mainstream.”
ACE (adverse childhood events) are broken down into 10 different categories:
- physical abuse
- sexual abuse
- emotional abuse
- physical neglect
- emotional neglect
- divorce or separation
- mental illness in the family
- incarceration of a family member
- domestic violence
- substance abuse
What’s troubling is the research conducted by the CDC in the 1990’s on 17,500 adults found out that 67% of adults experienced an ACE. But they also admitted they missed out asking about things like; bullying, racism, death of a caregiver, crisis (loss of home), financial issues, hospitalization… so realistically more people would have faced more than one ACE…
Some shocking stats:
- If you have eight ACE’s you’re three times more likely to die of lung cancer,
- & three and a half times more likely to die of heart disease…
- if you have 6 ACE’s, that’s correlated with a 20-year reduction in lifespan,
- four ACEs you’re two and a half times more likely to get cancer.
- You’re 4.2 times more likely to get Alzheimer’s,
- 100% more likely to get autoimmune disease
- 4.5 times more likely to suffer from anxiety or depression
- 12 times more likely to be suicidal
- 7 times more likely to be an alcoholic
- 3 times more likely to use injection drugs
“…if you have ACEs, a high number of ACEs, you have a dramatic increased risk of dying of seven out of the ten top causes of death…
Essential oils that can help:
“there’s plenty of good science behind using oils and affecting mood, physiology, and behaviour.”
Depending on the ‘stage’ of trauma depends on the emotion a child (or adult with unresolved issues), will be feeling.
There are 4 stages of trauma & each need differnet oils:
- denial, shock, loss & stress – anxiety beaters (lavender, Roman chamomile, Vetiver, ylang-ylang, rose, bergamot, frankincense, and sandalwood)
- realisation it actually happened – usually, a lot of anger in this stage so use calming oils again (lavender, sweet marjoram, Roman chamomile, sandalwood, ylang-ylang, geranium, and lemon balm [melissa])
- depression, apathy & grief – need to give ‘joy-giving’ oils (lavender, bergamot, ylang-ylang, tangerine, lemon balm, lemon, and frankincense)
- acceptance and reintegration – stimulating & uplifting oils are useful (wild orange, lemon, grapefruit, mandarin, bergamot, and tangerine)
What I thought:
Jeeps that was a lot of information (and obviously I haven’t shared everything Nicki goes into an awful lot more), but super useful!
I loved it when Nicki talked about the definition of trauma because it’s something which I always talk to my clients about:
“…it’s not a clear-cut thing. This is a subjective thing. And trauma just means that whatever the event was, it was too disturbing to deal with at the time. So it was shunted into the unconscious part of the brain in the memories. And it’s also saved in the body. And the body doesn’t forget. It keeps the score and actually biologically changes unless we interviene. So this is what the research is showing. It’s a hugely important area.”
It’s so important that you always confront your feelings, don’t dampen them down because your body really does pay attention. Just because you’re ignoring something it doesn’t mean it’s not having a physical, mental and spiritual affect on your person. The only way to reduce the lasting harm is to accept it and move forward. Ignoring it really does lead to serious health complications (take another look at the stats for proof!)
BUT- before you go blaming yourself, and feeling like there’s no hope it was great to see that Nicki also has the same standpoint as me with regards to:
“…having one ACE is actually better than having zero in some ways because for some it will actually educate a young person into resilience.”
That doesn’t mean it’s a good idea to purposely traumatise your child! What I suggest is just don’t shelter them to what’s going on in the world and let them know about all the big bad scary things so they can learn to protect themselves without having to go through it.
Mary Clendenin: Using Essential Oils to Manage Grief
Who is Mary Clendenin?
“…She is … a former elementary school teacher turned homeschool mom. And she lives on a third generation family farm of over 800 cows and with her husband they have two chidren, two sons.
Her family has been essential oil users for several years, and she’s currently an essential oil educator en masse… she enjoys enocouraging others to live a better life and to find joy in their journey each day…”
Mary’s top tips:
” …grief is not always, we most often associate it with death. But grief can encompass many forms… really anything, that is just a loss of something close to us in our lives that causes us to have deep sorrow and pain.”
“…your heart litterally feels broken.”
Where we physically feel grief/how it can manifest:
- heart (feeling physically & mentally numb)
- lungs (panick attacks)
- stomach (digestive issues)
- sleep difficulties
- mind (forgetfulness, disorientation…)
Essential oils and grief:
“…I don’t want anybody to think that. ‘Oh, the essential oils are just going to make it all go away and make it better.” They will help you and assist you but we have to go through this process to help soothe our broken heart and just get to the next step.”
“…they really have a powerful impact on the brain. And when you smell anything you know, it really affects our memories and limbic system, which is responsible for emotion, memory our fight or flight, the rest, the digestive response, the stress response, and our heart rate.”
“…emotional trauma leads to physical sickness.”
“…another things that essential oils do… they can help delete bad cellular memory. They can get rid of the bad… Because our cells can get so clogged with memories and shock, our body can literally go into shock. And we need assistance through this.”
Mary’s go-to oils:
- frankincense – helps with deep anxiety and grief and is also an immune booster
- bergamot – for soothing the body, and aiding sleep
- sandalwood – supports the heart
- Melissa – calming and uplifting
- rose – soothing for the heart
- citrus oils – uplifting
- cedarwood – for relaxing, and sleeping
- lavender – relaxing, calming & sleeping
What I thought:
I really enjoyed watching this talk because for me it really linked well with the other couple which were talking about trauma, and suicides. Horrible things happen in the world and I think it’s always really important to know that there is help out there when it may at times feel like your whole world has come crashing down.
Everything Mary was saying rang true to how I feel. The oils are not, and never will be a magic bullet but they can help facilitate your recovery journey. When life is so overwhelming, and the only thing you want to do is hide under the duvet using something like orange, or lemon can help kick-start your motivation and when you start moving forward that’s when the magic happens. That’s when the ‘recovery’ takes place. I’m going to leave you with a quote from me – something I say to all of my clients, and something which they all find really helpful:
Essential oils are not magic-bullets, they facilitate your recovery journey. By choosing to move forward every day. One step at a time, but consistently amazing things happen. This is what truly drives recovery. You are the only one who can heal yourself. The ball is always in your court, and it’s your choice to pick it up, or leave it there.” (Katie Woodland. 2016)
Dr. Kimberly McGeorge: Essential Oils and the Frequency of Emotion
Who is Dr. Kimberley McGeorge?
“…Dr. Kimberley McGeorge is the bestselling author of the book, ‘The Secret to Everything: Manifesting the Life You Desire NOW’. Dr Kim is also an internationally known frequency master, conscious creation expert, and naturopathic energy healer and has taught conscious principles on harmonic living for over two decades…”
Kimberley’s top tips:
“…We’re all energy… and we’re all frequency. And we all have different frequencies. And essential oils have frequencies. And parasites have a frequency. And more than that energy doesn’t lie. So emotions have the same frequency. Fear has a specific frequency, and love has a specific frequency, and everything in between that. And so the beautiful thing about oils is they come in at such a high frequency.”
“…each oil really has a use of 1 to 20 or 30 things.”
“…Kirlan photography, which is we can actually see, with photography, the human energy field… and the energetic measurement does match up with the blood test and with the medical.”
“…energy doesn’t lie. Energy is very specific.”
Essential Oils for energy:
- black pepper – during birthing process as it’s super stimulating
- frankincense, rose, and lavender – reduce scar tissue
- pines & cedarwoods – emotional imbalances
- citrus – mood uplifting
What I thought:
WOW! This stuff was so eye opening for me. I understood we were all energy, and that different ailments had different frequencies because that’s what fMRI machines tap into to find out what’s wrong but did I realise you can do the same yourself by using a special camera? Nope I did not!
I am just so blown away by this that it’s something I am personally going to do a bit more investigation into. I mean being able to tell what’s wrong with you, and which oils you need just by taking a selfie – that’s a game changer. It 100% takes the guesswork out of everything!
I am so curious to know if what I believe is needed in my own body is reflected by the Kirlan photograph… Going to have to maybe hunt one down somehow!
I’m going to leave you with a little insight from Dr. Z about coffee…
“…I’ve seen reports out there about coffee, for instance that people who just hold coffee or drink it, their frequency drops within seconds. And there have been a couple of studies that just drinking a cup of coffee can drop your frequency down to 52.”
