Well good evening oilers! Sorry, this is a late one, I’ve been super busy today and only just getting chance to go through all of yesterday’s notes!

Yesterday I gave you a pretty detailed run down of what happened, and I hope this has inspired you to register to find out more. Today, and for the rest of the week there’s not going to be as much because I don’t want to end up biasing your own views on such a fabulous subject. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still going to throw my 2 pence in the ring and give you my honest opinion but I’m going to leave a little more to the imagination. Especially as if you’re really up for learning you can still access most of the talks for free. Especially over here in the UK because we’re on a different time zone ūüėÄ

Magdelena Wszelaki: How to Rebalance Your Hormones with Essential Oils

Who is Magdelena Wszelaki?

“Magdelena is a nutrition coach¬†and has a practice specifically dedicated to helping women rebalance their hormones with nutrition. She is a certified nutrition coach, speaker, educator, and chef who struggled with hormonal challenges during which she developed as a result of her previous career in advertising.

She used to struggle with Graves’ disease, and Hashimoto’s autoimmune¬†which later transferred to adrenal fatigue and estrogen¬†dominance. She is currently in full remission and lives a symptom-free life.”

Magdelena’s tips for women:

Really get to grips with understanding your own body, how it works when you’re feeling great, and how you feel when things are starting to go downhill. Magdelena says that because of the way we are ‘diagnosed’ in western society often things like hormone difficulties are misdiagnosed, or underdiagnosed and this obviously¬†affects your ability to overcome any difficulties which you may be facing.

When it comes to essential oils (like everything), there’s no hard and fast rule about what is going to work. While there are specific oils which can help with rebalancing¬†hormones, certain oils will work for one person, and other oils will work for other people. You have to pick¬†and use the oils which work with your own cellular structure. Importantly you can’t just leave it up to oils, you have to support yourself on a holistic level to regain full health – which is absolutely possible.

What I thought:

When I was first listening to this interview a few days ago (I received early bird access when I signed up), the main thing that struck me was how she went from having some seriously debilitating health complications and is now living symptom-free. As a psychologist, I know how damaging stress can be on your mental health, and am starting to learn about all the horrific physical health complications as well. Approaching health on a truly holistic level really is the only way to regain your physical and mental health and it’s one of the main reasons as part of therapy we weave in lifestyle changes. I know it works in reducing mental health difficulties, but for some reason, I’m still shocked by how effective it is at supporting you back to physical health.

My hand on heart advice for anyone who is struggling with any health complication right now, whether it’s physical or mental is to stop and really pay attention to what’s going on in your life right now. How many hours sleep are you getting, what’s your diet like, and how much exercise are you getting? If these three are out of wack then it will be impacting your bodies own natural ability to heal, and support itself. If all this is in alignment then it’s time to break out the big guns, and do some kickstarting whether you choose to use oils, medication or therapeutic healing. A note of caution – if you skip the lifestyle part and go straight to external fixes then you will really struggle to recover.

Trudy Scott: Addressing Anxiety with Amino Acids and Oils:

Who is Trudy Scott?

“Trudy Scott is a food-mood expert. She’s a certified nutritionist on a mission to educate and empower anxious individuals worldwide about natural solutions for anxiety, stress, emotional eating… She works primarily with women, but the information she offers works equally well for men and children.

Trudy also teaches nutrition and mental health professionals, sharing all the recent research and how-to steps so they, too, can educate and empower their clients and patients.

She was the recipient of the 2012 Impact Award, and was a nominee for the 2015 Scattergood Innovation Award, as well. Trudy is the author of the AntiAnxiety Food Solution: How the Foods You Eat Can Help You Calm Your Anxious Mind, Improve Your Mood, and End Cravings, and also the host of the wildly successful Anxiety Summit”

Trudy’s tips for women:

“…I just think we need to focus on food first, and I know that‚Äôs a big approach of yours, real whole food. Organic, grass-fed red meat, wild fish. Sardines are great. Eating to balance blood sugar. Getting off problematic foods like gluten and sugar, caffeine, addressing gut health. All of these are just foundational things that we need to think about when it comes to eating real, whole food and just providing our body with the nutrients that we need. ¬†

…It‚Äôs food and then these specific nutrients. And now, obviously, adding in essential oils or using essential oils while you‚Äôre trying to figure all of this out…

… I love lavender just because there‚Äôs so much research around it. There was a review published in October 2015, a systematic review of the anxiolytic-like effects of essential oils. This is obviously the anxiety reducing effects of essential oils. And the essential oil with the best profile is lavender…

…one of the studies that I really like is a study that looked at patients with high blood pressure and high stress …¬†they had them use a blend of lavender, ylang-ylang, and bergamot once a day for four weeks …¬†the conclusion of the study is saying that it could be considered an effective intervention to reduce psychological stress response and serum cortisol levels…¬†¬†it‚Äôs pretty amazing to see that using this blend of essential oil can actually change some of our biochemistry, very, very powerful…”

What I thought:

It was awesome to read about the research showing how effective essential oils have been on reducing stress, and anxiety. Especially when I read the last paragraph which I noted above for you all – that the oil blend changed the biochemistry. If you ever needed proof that it’s not a placebo then for me this would be it! Although, it’s something I had already seen frequently when working with clients, and why we use oils in therapy. For us, they help to kickstart the healing process, and drastically reduce the time needed to support someone back to full mental health.

What’s really important to take away though from this talk for me personally was actually what occurred next in the conversation between¬†Dr Z, and Trudy –

“On the opposite end, we could look at it and say what about the other chemicals that are in the air that we’re smelling, right…¬†¬†what if that is a toxic chemical…” Dr Z. (2016)

For me, this was really telling because since I started using the oils I have personally cut out all toxic chemicals from the house be it anti-bacterial sprays, or shampoo. While I usually struggle really badly with hayfever over the summer, this year since throwing all the chemicals away it’s not really surfaced… ¬†Basically, my immune system has not had to spend it’s time-fighting toxins, and instead can fight off the pollen without the need for copious amounts of antihistamines.

Then there was this little takeaway from Trudy which I really want to share with you because I think it’s going to shock a few people…

“… ¬†I know that … cigarette smoke actually depletes you of some of the nutrients that are needed for anxiety. Vitamin C is depleted. And some of the B vitamins are depleted when you‚Äôre exposed to secondhand smoke.” Trudy Scott (2016)

So for all of you out there who smoke to calm yourself down in real terms on a biological level – it’s actually having the opposite effect! If there was ever a day to quit smoking I think today might be it!

Dr Veronique Desauliners: Using Essential Oils to Maximise Women’s Health

Who is Dr Veronique Desauliners?

“Dr V. is a number one bestselling author, has maintained successful practices in the wellness field since 1979… Because of her passion for health and wellness, Dr. V, undertook extensive studies in various fields of energy medicine, specialising in chiropractic bioenergetics, meridian, stress analysis, homeopathy,¬†and digital thermography… after 30 years in active practice, she decided to retire and devote her time sharing her personal non-toxic healing journey with breast cancer.”

Veronique’s¬†tips for women:

You need to make sure that you are healing the whole of yourself, not just concentrating on either the physical, mental or emotional. You have to get really honest with yourself and not stuff things deep down inside.

Dr V believes that while she was physically and mentally healthy¬†because she was an ’emotional stuffer’ (e.g., she always ignored those things which were emotionally painful) this impacted her bodies ability to heal, and therefore developed cancer. However, after two years of dealing with her emotional issues, iodine deficiency, her sensitivity to electropollution and her dental infection the cancer cleared up and she was cancer free.

Dr V developed a simple step-by-step program (the 7 Essentials), for people to follow which can help support your body to stay healthy long term.

The 7 Essentials are:

  1. Let food be your medicine
  2. Reduce your toxic exposure
  3. Balance your energy
  4. Heal your heart, and heal your wounds
  5. Embrace biological dentistry
  6. Repair your body with therapeutic plants and herbs
  7. Early detection, and learning to keep a pulse on your health

What I thought:

Simple right? OK so while the 7 Essentials look simple on the surface, and as I was cataloging them all I was thinking “Oh yeah I’m doing alright at this”. But then I really started to pay attention to what Dr V was saying and I’m sure like many of you reading this we probably fall down on some of the really simple, and basic things like getting a consistently good diet, or not becoming an ’emotional stuffer’…

In therapy, this emotional stuffing is so typical of the guys and gals I work with. We all tend to focus on helping other people so much we tend to neglect ourselves¬†and wonder why we get ill…

Hey, I will absolutely hold my hands up and say I am exactly the same. In all fairness I’ve been having a rough couple of weeks because of how busy work has been so you end up skipping a meal or two (because you’re out all day and forgot to prepare), your 9 hours sleep ends up being 6 hours, and exercise well who has time for that?

But then today as I was talking to my big sister I just came out with it. I’ve been so rubbish the last couple of weeks, I’m absolutely knackered and I know exactly why so now I need to stop being silly and put my health before everything else because in all honesty if I’m unwell the business falls apart, and I am unable to look after my family properly. This is such a difficult thing for people to get their heads around – you’re actually being selfish when you don’t put yourself first because

I’m just giong to leave you with one last quote from Dr V before moving onto the next talk…

“The average home has over 1,000 toxic chemicals in it…” (Dr V. 2016)

Melody Watts: Essential Oils for Mood Management & Stress

Who is Melody Watts?

“She is a functional medicine clinical expert with nearly 20 years in the field. She specializes particularly in helping practitioners use natural therapies like essential oils to help their patients…”

Melody’s tips for women:

“… one of the things that I use to reduce toxic load and stress management are essential oils. And they have literally have been a lifesaver for me. They’ve literally supported me in ways and shifted my emotions in ways that I was able to function and handle stress at a completely different level…”

“…essential oils are essential to the plant’s life. And it protects the plant from environmental threat. It also protects the plant’s cells. So it works the same way with our cells, protecting our cells…”

“… Our body is created to function as a whole: our spirit, our mind, and our body. And if we nourish those three areas, we’re going to be a whole lot healthier physically.”

“…when these three brains [gut, heart & head], come together with all these different emotions or feelings, then it can really cause confusion. It can lead to tension. It can cause an unsettled stomach. So that’s how emotions affect you physically. And so when we learn to manage these emotions, we become really empowered.”

“…there’s essential oils that can help you get clear on those. So for example, frankincense. Frankincense is one of the best oils to help you get cleared. It helps prevent the effects of stress and it also just is a nervous system tonic. So I love to apply frankincense along the spine and on the heart because it affects every cell in my body within about 40 seconds. so were looking at really shifting emotional tones and creating clarity.”

What I thought:

I was really interested in this talk because Melody talks about something I’ve never heard of before – the ‘tones’ in the earth, in the oils our emotional tones… Particularly how everything connected in this way, and when we’re feeling off kilter it’s these tones we need to restore in our bodies.

This is something which really struck a chord with me. As if a little alarm bell is ringing in my subconscious alerting me to some new, vital piece of information I have been missing. As if this is another piece of the puzzle of life! It’s definitely something I am going to personally look into more once this summit is over (and when I’ve not got another 20+ hours of talks left to watch, digest and report on…).

The other great part was when Melody talks about using her instincts to ‘choose’ the oil. This is something I do regularly. I always find that if I need an oil I will just go to the first one which pops into my head and then because I’m still a newbie (and mainly because my conscious has kicked in I go to my oil guide), and so far everytime the oil I have picked has been one which my body has needed. So for me, I just need to trust my body knows best, and it doesn’t matter anyhow because unless you’re going crazily overboard there’s no side effects!

Obviously there was an awful lot more discussed in this talk but hey if I shared everything that would completely undermine the whole point of the summit!

Dr. Mariza Snyder: The Secret to Hormone Synergy with Essential Oils

Who is Dr. Mariza Snyder?

“…Dr. Mariza Snyder is a passionate functional wellness practitioner and public speaker committed to inspiring people to live healthy and abundant lives.

She graduated cum laude from Life Chiropractic College West in 2008 and has a background in biochemistry and certifications in nutrition and aromatherapy.

…she is a specialist overall with holistic health.”

Mariza’s top tips for women:

“…I believe how we get health, how we get our hormones back on track and create that synergy, is through the lifestyle habits that we use every single day.

And essential oils are so imperative or so critical to helping us to create those beautiful healthy habits… how you can utilize essential oils to create hormone synergy but specifically in daily activities and daily habits that you can do to create that balance over time.”

“…I always think about well moms want to take care of their families. They want to keep their families immune system up. And so I love diffusing oils. I love diffusing citruses, like lemon and orange, and cinnamon and rosemary, oils that are going to purify and keep the air clean, because we want healthy families.

But I also think about the reset that mamas need oftentimes. Sometimes you’re just in the car and you’re feeling the load of the day. Maybe you’re feeling little overwhelmed. And so my number one go to reset blend, and I have this in a roller already to go, is a combination of frankincense, lavender, and bergamot… we know, through¬†research, that this blend resets our system. It helps to reduce those stress levels. It helps to get our cortisol back to balance and allows us to continue tackling the day…”

“…The number one complaint that comes to me almost with every single woman I connect with, either online or over the phone or I meet in person, is energy. They are struggling with energy…¬†

…one of my favourite energy boosters, so that we’re not relying on caffeine, like Red Bulls or a ton of coffee or that Frappuccino at the end of the day, or maybe it’s that candy bar, which is just lending to this insulin cascade of craziness, I love just two simple oils to help get that energy back on track… orange and peppermint.”

What I thought:

I really liked the way Dr. Snyder talks about essential oils as being a bridge which can be used to leverage us in such a way that we create healthy habits. Because this is really on the same page with how I have learned to think of them – I always say they’re great for kickstarting us back to health because often they can be used to give us that energy boost we need to get out the door and head to the gym. Or they can be used to help reset our sleep patterns so we don’t feel rubbish the next day… But as with everything in life, there really are no quick fixes and you have to do the work i.e., eat, sleep and exercise to truly support yourself physically, spiritually and mentally.

I also loved the great tip about having your oils ready and with you for when you’re out and about. I have a keychain with all my ’emergency oils’ in which are completely personal to me which have got me out of a few tricky situations – especially a digestive blend which enables me to eat out in public without fear of bloating up like a balloon! But it’s 100% true you can never tell what’s going to happen and if you end up being out all day and then everything just seems to go wrong – for me being able to go into my bag, slather on some oils and get back to feeling like my old self in a few minutes means the difference between being able to truly help the person in front of me, and not.
